Minister of Sport, Russian Federation

Vitaly Mutko has been Minister of Sport, Tourism and Youth Policy for the Russian Federation since May 2008, having previously been President of the Russian Football Union (RFU).

From October 2003 to April 2005, Mr Mutko served as representative of the Government of St. Petersburg in the Federation Council of Russia, a position that followed around six years as President of the city’s top football club, FC Zenit.

Mr Mutko’s service to St. Petersburg stretched back still further; from 1992 to 1996 he was the city’s Deputy Mayor as well as Chairman of the St. Petersburg Mayor’s Office Committee of Social Affair. Prior to this, Mr Mutko served as deputy of the Kirov District Council before leading the district administration.

Between 1983 and 1990, Mr Mutko worked as executive instructor, head of department and secretary of the District Executive Committee for the Kirov District. This followed a period at Northwestern River Shipping.

Vitaly Mutko was born on 8 December in the Krasnodar region, and is a graduate of Leningrad River School, the Leningrad Institute of Water Transport and St. Petersburg State University. He was awarded the Order of Honor in 1994, the Order of Friendship in 2002 and the Order of Merit Before the Country, IV Degree, in 2008.
