Russian Railways has the second largest network in the world with 85,500 km of track – 43,000 km of which is electrified. The Company carries over 1.1 billion passengers and 1.1 billion tones of freight annually across 11 time zones and is responsible for 43% of the total of Russia’s freight traffic (including pipelines) and more than 41% of passenger traffic. Russian Railways employs over 1 million employees. It is a major contributor to the fast-growing Russian economy with assets worth over 88 billion USD (as of 31/12/2008). Russian Railways is Russia’s fourth largest company by revenue – over 41 billion USD for 2008 (according to IFRS report). It comprises 987 enterprises and 165 subsidiaries.
