Andrey Makarevich

Famous Russian musician and Sochi 2014 Ambassador

It came as a pleasant surprise to me to be named an Ambassador for the Cultural Olympiad.

Andrey Makarevich is a People's Artist of the Russian Federation, the lead singer of the group “Time Machine”, and a TV and radio presenter. He studied at the Moscow Architectural Institute (State Academy) and to this day sees himself first and foremost as an artist, although he is of course better known as a musician. Not long after hearing The Beatles for the first time in the late sixties, he and some friends formed a group called The Kids, later renamed Time Machine.

10 years later, Time Machine became the first underground rock band to receive official recognition, and were welcomed into Russia's main touring and concert organization, Roskontsert. Time Machine are still releasing albums today and remain one of the nation's best-loved bands.

Andrey has plenty of other strings to his bow, beyond being a songwriter: he founded the first ever cooking programme on Russian TV - Smak, presents a travel programme, is ever-enthusiastic in his business and charitable ventures, hosts music festivals, enjoys diving, and finds time to paint and write books. Makarevich is a knight of several state orders and a member of the Presidential Council for Culture and Art.

Andrey Makarevich was named an Ambassador for the Sochi 2014 Cultural Olympiad on May 14th, 2011, the day when the "1000 Days to the Games" festivities took place.
