Luge competitor Anne Abernathy became the first woman to qualify for six Olympic Winter Games in 2006, but failed to compete in Turin after breaking her wrist during a practice run.
Affectionately known as 'Grandma Luge', Abernathy became the oldest woman to compete at an Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City in 2002, at age 48. Although injured four years later, she was officially recorded as a participant in Turin and therefore broke her own record.
