Russia made its first appearance at the Olympic Winter Games after the disolution of the Soviet Union in Lillehammer in 1994, topping the medal tally with 23 medals - 11 gold, eight silver and four bronze.
Russian figure skaters have dominated the competition since 1994. In the pairs event they won four successive gold medals, including Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze sharing gold with Canadian pair Jamie Sale and David Pelletier in 2002. That run was ended in 2010, when China took gold and silver and Russia failed to win a medal in the pairs.
Ice dancing has also been a successful event for Russia. Pasha Grishuk and Yevgeni Platov won the event in 1994 and 1998, while Tatiana Navka and Roman Kostomarov took gold in 2006.
In the men's individual event Russian skaters won four consecutive titles, with Aleksei Urmanov , Ilya Kulik , Alexei Yagudin and Yevgeni Plushenko all being crowned Olympic champions. Plushenko narrowly failed to win back-to-back titles when he finished second to the United States' Evan Lysacek in Vancouver.
Russian athletes have also proved dominant in endurance events including cross-country skiing and biathlon. The women's biathlon relay team has won a medal at each Games since 1994 - gold in 1994, 2006 and 2010, silver in 1998 and bronze in 2002.
