We're convinced that Sochi, and all the transport infrastructure taking shape as we move towards the Sochi 2014 Games, will represent a model of what a barrier-free environment should be: a place where people with disabilities can feel at ease, and where new opportunities will be opened up to them.

I would say that we’re delighted to see how the preparations are going for the Olympic Games in Sochi. It’s not easy to build sports facilities in the mountains - sometimes you have to adapt to the local conditions. Our Russian friends have done some great work and are running to schedule on all of it.

Russia’s construction companies have smashed all the world records going: never before has such a complex venue been put up so speedily and in such a high-quality manner, in under two years! I like absolutely everything I see here! It looks like the word “impossible” doesn't exist in the Russian language!

“There aren’t too many countries that would be capable, in the space of just seven years and having started from scratch, of organizing and staging the kind of Olympic Games we are expecting from you. These Games are going to be truly extraordinary, unlike anything we have seen before”.

Staging the Olympic Games without volunteers would be unthinkable. I am pleased to see that a burning heart was chosen to symbolize the volunteer campaign. It represents the mood and spirit of those taking part in the movement. I am convinced that all large-scale events of this nature should include volunteers. In places with a long tradition of volunteering, people of all ages get actively involved. The last Olympics in Vancouver were a prime example. They comprised of large numbers of older people, including elderly pensioners, who were willing to help stage a public event, regardless of the scale of the project.

I want to show everyone, by my skating, that I can still perform, even after winning the Olympic Games. I can't say where I will finish at my fourth Olympics, but for me, taking part in the Games in Sochi will be a victory in itself.

The impetus which the Olympic Games has given to the Volunteer Movement in our country will be even more important than the Olympics itself for forming civil society and for Russia’s social and political development. There are already Volunteer Centres in 26 Russian regions and we believe they are extremely important.

“This year we will prepare all the Mountain Cluster venues for staging sports competitions. Next year starting from May and till September, all the arenas except for the Central Stadium must be completed. After that there will test events held of even higher level – these ones in the Mountain cluster for all the sports including ski jumping. We are definitely planning to accomplish all the above-said and we are confident that all of that will be completed on time. There haven’t been any critical suggestions concerning cost increase on projects invested in by private sponsors. Suggestions have been put forward on supplementary financing and support on behalf of the state, such as the subsidizing of interest rates on credit or acquiring shares in private companies’ charter capital. This is under consideration at present but there are no serious financial consequences for the state as far as these projects are concerned. It may be that for some of the most topical projects there will be decisions made on either fractional easing of interest rates upon them or their being subsidized out of the state budget funds. But these will be minimal, insignificant expenditures of taxpayers’ money”.

According to some reputable researchers, the Holy Mount Olympus, if at all it could be associated with any terrestrial mountain, belongs somewhere to the Caucasus Mountains. It follows that for the first time in the history of the Olympic Games the Olympionics in Sochi will be hot on the heels of the hosts of the Olympic Mystery.

It is an honour for me to be offered the privilege to become a Sochi 2014 Ambassador. Within my new role I will be putting effort into ensuring that the revival of sport in Russia, supported by The Sochi 2014 Winter Games, will help the nation to engage in sport. I will be paying particular focus to poor children from across the regions as I know that there are real little stars amongst them, who should be given the opportunity to shine!
