Winter Paralympians toady competed for medals in short distance biathlon for visually impaired athletes. Russia continued a triumphant first day of competition at the Paralympic Games in Sochi. The Russian team added three more medals at each level of the podium in the events.
The 6km race saw a convincing victory for Russia’s Mikhalina Lysova. She finished without a single miss and her final time was an impressive 20 minutes 3.2 seconds. Another Russian, Julia Budaleeva, finished 28.5 seconds later, failing to close two targets on the first shooting range. The bronze medal went to Oksana Shyshkova of Ukraine, who also completed the race without a miss but trailed the winner by 45.8 seconds.
The fastest biathlete in the men’s 7.5km competition was Vitaliy Lukyanenko of Ukraine. He succeeded with clean shots at both the shooting ranges and finished with a time of 20 minutes 18.8 seconds. Russia’s Nikolay Polukhin had one penalty but won the silver medal with a time 11 seconds behind the winner. Vasili Shaptsiaboi of Belarus won the bronze medal, finishing 47.8 seconds off gold with one miss at the first range.
