Switzerland beat Sweden 4-3 to capture the bronze medal in women's Olympic ice hockey at the Bolshoy Ice Dome.
Sweden built up a 2-0-lead after two periods, with goals from Michelle Lowenhielm and Erica Uden Johansson. But an early 2-1-goal in the third period, scored by Sara Benz, revitalised the Swiss team. Phoebe Stanz tied the game in a power play after 6:13, and Jessica Lutz scored Switzerland's third with six minutes to play. Alina Muller then scored into an empty net at 18:53 to make it 4-2 after Sweden had pulled its goaltender as it chased the game. Alina Muller, 15, is the third youngest player to ever play ice hockey in an Olympic Winter Games. Sweden grabbed a late goal through Pernilla Winberg to make it 4-3 but Muller’s goal proved decisive.
Switzerland won a bronze medal in the world championship two years ago, but the Olympic bronze is the first ever for Switzerland in women's ice hockey.
