An ice climbing festival organized by Sberbank has begun in the capital of the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
The ice climbing festival is one of the key sports activities of Sberbank - General Partner of Sochi 2014 - taking place during the main Olympic competitions.
Ice climbing involves overcoming ice slopes using special equipment. Currently this discipline is a separated segment in mountaineering. Ice climbing competitions are held on both natural terrain and special artificial constructions – ice tracks.
As part of the Sberbank ice climbing festival an ice track with a 15-meter stand of artificially made vertical ice was built in the centre of the Olympic Park. Fans and members of the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi will be able to learn the key rules of the popular winter sport and take a crack at the ice.
The sports and entertainment programme includes trainings for beginners, prize contests for participants and spectators, performances and master classes by leading climbers of the world, light shows and video installations.
Everyone can take part in the festival which runs until February 23.
