From March 21, "Adler-Arena" will held the Essent ISU World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships staged by the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee in cooperation with the Russian Skating Union (RSU) and the International Skating Union (ISU).
On the first day of the Championship, awards were contested at 1,500 m for men and 3,000 m for women.
The 1,500 m competition ended in unexpected victory for the Russians. The world champion, incidentally setting the Adler Arena record was Denis Yuskov and the bronze winner was Sochi 2014 Ambassador Ivan Skobrev. Second place on the podium was occupied by American Shane Davis.
24 male competitors from 12 different took part in men`s competitions.
Ireen Wüst (Netherlands) gained victory in the women's 3,000 m, beating favorites Martina Sáblíková from the Czech Republic and Claudia Pechstein from Germany.
24 female competitors from 10 different countries took part in men`s competitions.
On March 22 as part of the Championship, there will be competitions at 1,500 m and 5,000 m for men and 1,500 m for women.
Denis Yuskov (Russia):
"I could hear Russian fans shouting when I was passing the Russian stands. It definitely encouraged me".

Notes to the Editor
"Adler-Arena" is intended for the staging of speed skating competitions. The ice rink has been specially designed so as to guarantee that the speed skaters can achieve the best possible times.
The height of the building is 24.7 m and length is 274 m, which is exactly the length of three football fields. The total area of the 3 ice tracks at the area is approximately equivalent to 3 hockey pitches.
The building is oval in shape with tinted gray-blue stained glass. Modern concrete technology was used for the construction of the support structures to provide the strength and safety of the building.
