This new day at the Olympics promises to be a full and fascinating one.
The Iceberg is hosting the finals of the team competition in figure skating, making its debut at the Games. Russia is in the lead with 37 points, with Canada just six points behind and the US in third place with 27 points. Skaters Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov will be striving for the gold alongside Yevgeny Pluschenko and Yulia Lipnitskaya.
Fierce competition will also come to the ski slopes today, where the men’s skiathlon competitions will be held in the 15 km classic and 15 km free events. Norwegians Petter Northug and Martin Johnsrud Sundby are considered the favorites to win. Medal contenders also include Alexander Legkov and Maxim Vylegzhanin from Russia, Marcus Hellner from Sweden, Dario Cologna from Switzerland, and Alex Harvey from Canada.
The second biathlon, the women’s sprint will be held at Laura. The Norwegians take on the decorated Andrea Henkel of Germany, Kaisa Makarainen of Finland, Ukrainians Vita Semerenko and Elena Pidgrushnaya as well as Russian athletes.
The first medals will be awarded in men’s luge. In Saturday's two races the German Felix is ahead of Albert Demtschenko by almost three tenths - 1.44,169 - 1.44,443. Among the medal contenders are Armin Zoggeler of Italy and Andi Langenhan of Germany.
In women's speed skating, Martina Sablikova and Irene Wust begin their fight for the title of best konkobezhki at a distance of 3000 m
On the Roza Khutor ski slopes, world champion Aksel Lund Svindal may take the first gold medal in the men's downhill for Norway. Another favorite is American Bode Miller. Also in the mountains, the female slopestyle athletes take to the course in the search for Olympic glory. This snowboard discipline has been included in the Olympic Games schedule for the first time.
The men's individual final is taking place on the K-95 jump, where spectators will see the Vancouver Olympic Champion Simon Ammann (Switzerland) and the 2013 World Champion Anders Bardal (Norway).
The women's group ice hockey tournament will continue with Sweden against Japan whilst Russia take on Germany.
