With just a year to go until the Winter Olympic Games, Sochi 2014 General Partner Sberbank will stage the "Green Marathon" on the 18th May 2013 across 42 Russian cities.
The marathon will encourage Russians to take a step towards a healthy lifestyle and become more involved in the Olympic Games in Sochi. After the4.2 km run, participants and guests will be able to contribute to the landscaping of their city by planting trees in the cities participating in the project.
In May 2012, over 30,000 sports enthusiasts were present at the start of the Marathon across Russia. In Moscow, 4,000 people participated in the event, including the President of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee, Dmitry Chernyshenko. Sochi 2014 Games Ambassadors - Svetlana Khorkina and Tatiana Navka, Honorary President of the Russian Olympic Committee, Leonid Tyagachev, and other guests also took part. In total, 42 trees were planted.
The Sberbank initiative was included in the "Billion Trees" program, which is being implemented by UNEP, the United Nations Environment Program. The program also won the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee award for contribution to sustainability, ("Gateway to the Future!") and is supported by the Sochi 2014 Environment Program.
Sberbank is working closely with the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee to protect the natural environment in Sochi during the preparations for the 2014 Olympic Games. They are also committed to implementing sustainable development across Russia. The "2013 Green Marathon" project will ensure that approximately 3,000 new trees will be planted in towns and cities around the country.
Deputy Chairman of Sberbank of Russia's Board of Directors, Stanislav Kuznetsov said:

Organizers expect the “Green Marathon” to attract people from across the country, from all works of life.
