Sochi 2014 celebrates World Earth Day
In honor of World Earth Day, which is traditionally celebrated on April 22, the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee is launching an environmental campaign to clean up the Natural Ornithological Park in the Imeretinskaya valley.
The ornithological park covering almost 300 hectares was built as part of the environmental activity accompanying the Games preparation, and is a refuge for 200 types of feathered creatures that live here permanently, winter here or rest during their migration. Among them are rare types of swans, black storks, herons, bustards, peregrine falcons - the fastest flying birds, and many others. Maintaining the cleanliness of this wonderful place will help to further increase of the number of birds.
On Earth Day, school children in the region will also be able to visit the unique Aviary Complex in Krasnaya Polyana. The release of "Sochi's Canyons", a guidebook for an environmental educational path, coincides with the international celebration. These initiatives again underscore the importance that the Olympic project brings to caring for the environment.
Over 200 people will participate in the planting of tree saplings and shrubs, as well as the cleanup of specially protected natural grounds in the ornithological park. This group includes Sochi 2014 volunteers, Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee staff, representatives of the administrations of Sochi and the Krasnodar region, and trainees and workers from the Environmental Biological Center of Sochi. The Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee's social environmental campaign has united the Games Marketing Partners: representatives of The Dow Chemical Company, OAO "MegaFon", OAO "Rostelecom" and OAO "Baltika Brewing Company" who will come out to clean a portion of the "Swan Lake" Ornithological Park located on the grounds of the Main Olympic Village.
On April 22, the Games organizers are arranging an excursion for school children of two mountain villages of the Sochi region, Galitsino and Chereshni, to the Aviary Complex of the Caucasian State Natural Biosphere Reserve of H.G. Shaposhnikov, which is included on the UNESCO list of World Natural Heritage Sites.
At this complex, located in Krasnaya Polyana, the children will be able to see and feed rare animals, including Caucasian mountain bison, European buffalo, Caucasian deer and others. The event will be a phase in the implementation of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee's "21-Day Agenda for the Sustainability of Pilot Alpine Settlements" program.
For Earth Day, the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee has also issued the "Sochi's Canyons" guidebook for an environmental educational path. Alongside a description of the territory's notable environmental features, the brochure also contains a detailed topographical map, around 40 stunning photos, and a code of conduct for tourists following the path. The "Sochi’s Canyons" path will familiarize anyone interested with one of the most amazing parts of nature on Sochi's Black Sea Coast: the mysterious world of the cave canyons.
The guidebook will be distributed in the city's educational institutions and in Sochi's tourist association departments. In addition, it will be available for download on the official website of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee in the "Environment" section. The release of the brochure will enable development in the area of ecotourism, one of the most important elements of the "green" legacy of the 2014 Games.
