The History of St Isaac's Cathedral to be Told by the Sochi 2014 Cultural Olympiad
One of Russia's most significant museums - the state memorial museum "St Isaac's Cathedral" - has become a participant in the Sochi 2014 Cultural Olympiad. As part of the Year of the Museum, it will host a wide range of exhibitions related to the museum's activity, the history of all its cathedrals, the architects who constructed them and their benefactors.
On March 14, within the Sochi 2014 Cultural Olympiad, an exhibition will open at the Smolny Cathedral - one of the four cathedrals that make up the "State Memorial Museum "St Isaac's Cathedral". The exhibition will be entitled "Alfred Parland. The architect's legacy", and is dedicated to the 170th anniversary of the birth of the man who created the Temple of the Resurrection of Christ (Blood of the Savior).
It was Parland who conceived the unique way in which the interior of the temple was decorated. The architect was the creator of the images on the mosaics and on most of the ornaments, icon cases and iconostases. The exhibition, which is dedicated to the memory of this talented St Petersburg architect, will display the sketches for these works, along with portraits and photographs of Parland himself and his family. These items come from the private collection of the architect's great-grandgaughter, Milena, and the archives of the Swedish Literature Foundation. The event will be accompanied by a screening of the film "The architect Alfred Parland".
This is the second cultural event in St Petersburg of the Sochi 2014 Cultural Olympiad, devoted to the history of the "St Isaac's Cathedral" memorial museum.
The first took place in January-February 2013 and was a photography exhibition entitled "Preserving is as good as acquiring...". Visitors were able to learn more about the painstaking work, talent and expertise of the professional restorers who had helped to preserve the artistic decoration of the memorial temples for future generations.
From October 23 to November 14 this year, an exhibition entitled "In memory of Maria Fedorovna - benefactress of youth. Academic and charitable institutions of the Empress Maria Fedorovna" will be held. This exhibition will tell the story of the impact made by Pavel I's wife on the development of charitable work in St Petersburg. The Empress supported academic and artisan institutions and contributed to the restoration of Smolny cathedral.
The exhibitions, which are taking place as part of the Sochi 2014 Cultural Olympiad's Year of the Museum, once again demonstrated to Russian and international visitors the steps that are being taken in order to celebrate St Petersburg's cultural legacy.

Sochi 2014 Cultural Olympiad
2013 - The Year of the Museum
The fourth year of the Sochi 2014 Cultural Olympiad is devoted to museums. Just as in previous years, the organizers of the first ever Winter Games in Russia's history will be presenting hundreds of top cultural events and musical projects to the public.
The Sochi 2014 Cultural Olympiad is a unique project from the organizers of the Games, presenting the country's foremost cultural events. In 2014, visitors to the Olympic host city will be able to take in not only the sports competitions, but also to admire Russia's cultural diversity, at dozens of concert venues located in Sochi and Krasnaya Polyana. For that reason, since 2010 the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee, along with dozens of regions throughout the country, has been carefully selecting the very best that Russian culture has to offer.
Between 2010 and 2014, thousands of diverse cultural events are going to take place throughout the entire country. Each year the Cultural Olympiad is dedicated to a particular art form: 2010 was the Year of the Cinema, 2011 was the Year of the Theater, 2012 was the Year of Music, and 2013 is the Year of the Museum.
The Russia-wide scope of the project means that it will be possible to get everyone in the country involved in this grand cultural celebration, thereby helping to preserve and promulgate this country's cultural riches.
