"Marathon of Olympic Knowledge" Reaches Four Million Schoolchildren
To mark National Teacher’s Day, the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee summed up the results of the all-Russian educational “Marathon of Olympic Knowledge”, which started on September, 1st with an Olympic lesson on the theme of “London 2012 – Sochi 2014”; it was broadcast online. Altogether during the "Marathon of Olympic Knowledge", more than 100,000 Olympic lessons were held for more than four million schoolchildren across the country. More than 100,000 teachers participated in the event along with representatives of the “Sochi 2014” partners and “Sochi 2014” volunteers.
The "Marathon Olympic of Knowledge" concluded with a lesson on the same theme of "London 2012 - Sochi 2014" at the Moscow Center of Education № 548 Tsaritsyno with the participation of Alexander Mikhailin, judoist and silver medalist at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Alexander Zhukov, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation and President of the Russian Olympic Committee, conducted the lesson.
Despite the completion of the "Marathon of Olympic Knowledge", the mission of "Sochi 2014" Olympic education will remain relevant even after the Games in Sochi. In the long term, the Organizing Committee in cooperation with the ROC intends to launch a full-scale program to introduce educational materials to the subjects of the Russian Federation with the support of the regional Olympic councils and educational, physical educational and sports authorities. A distance education program for representatives of all 83 subjects was launched in September of this year in order to achieve this goal, and as a result of this program by the end of 2013 Olympic education will encompass the entire country.

The "Sochi 2014" System of Olympic Education has been confirmed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Its main goal is spreading the Olympic and Paralympic ideals for the creation of a friendly environment for staging the XXII Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic Winter Games of 2014 in Sochi. The Sochi 2014 Olympic Education system is also designed to be integrated into the Russian education system to create in order to foster full understanding of the Olympic Movement and the sports industry in general.
