Modern Technologies

The organization and staging of the innovative Games is one of the strategic objectives of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee. During the preparation for the Games, modern and effective technology solutions are used for a variety of tasks in areas such as communication, telecommunications, transport, logistics and others.

In the Olympic project, the following are considered to be part of the area of "Modern Technologies":

  • The use of innovative technology solutions;
  • The development of a legal normative base;
  • The perfection of approaches and practices in the management of large projects at a federal level;
  • The distribution of cutting-edge experience in the area of organizing sports and mass events.

The following tasks must be completed in order to ensure the use and development of modern technologies during the preparation and staging of the Games:

  • The use of advanced technologies in communication, telecommunications and IT solutions;
  • Helping in the application of innovative technical solutions in the area of transport, logistics and the Unified Identification System;
  • The perfection of a legal normative base in the area of the volunteer movement, universal access and "green standards";
  • The creation of a center for higher education and new standards in the area of sports management;
  • The collection and distribution of knowledge, experience and practice, gained during the preparation and staging of the Games.

The technological solutions of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee will provide high quality services to all of their clients: The Olympic and Paralympic Families, athletes, media, Games personnel, the spectators at the stadiums and the international audience of the Games.

Technology for the 2014 Games includes:

  • 120,000 pieces of equipment,
  • 25,000 radio stations,
  • 1,600 video cameras ,
  • 100 gigawatts of energy,
  • 10,000 kilometers of optics,
  • 600,000 sports results measuring devices.
  • 30 petabytes of web traffic

For the preparation and staging of the Games at the highest level, the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee is using a whole series of innovative solutions. Among them, the following will play a special role:

  • A 3D-Model (a three dimensional model of the territory for the staging of the Games);
  • UIS (United Identification System)

UIS is an innovative, automated system that identifies users and grants access to a number of high-tech services. UIS Users are athletes, participants and guests of the Games, official delegations, journalists, service personnel and volunteers.

Through the UIS portal or an information terminal, the user will be able to order tickets for sports events; reserve places in hotels, restaurants and transport; and order personal services such as transfer, transport, translator services, reserve parking spaces and others. The user may also receive general information on sports and cultural events of the Games, the availability of tickets for sports competitions and the transport timetable. All information will be provided in the native language or in another accessible language;

The 3D-Model is an innovative three dimensional model of the staging area of the Games. It will be able to carry out a virtual interaction test of all the different departments during the Games, which will make it possible to significantly increase the work efficiency of all services. During the preparation for the Games, the 3D-Model will be implemented for the first time in the history of the Olympic movement.

Thanks to the 1980 Olympics, Soviet television gained technologies which were then used for many years. The Games in Sochi will also make a huge contribution to Russian telecommunications. The broadcast from the Games in Sochi will be carried out in HDTV digital format with Dolby 5.1 sound as well as using a complex application of IT solutions and use of video on demand technology. The application of high technologies along with the development of sports broadcasts in Russia will become a significant part of the Games' legacy.
