The Olympic Games originated in Ancient Greece. According to tradition, the date of the first competitions considered to be the prototype of the Olympic Games was 776 B.C. The competitions were held in the town of Olympia in the north-west region of the Peloponnese. The Games began on the day of the first full moon after the summer solstice, and lasted for five days.
